The Bell is the oldest small pub in the City of London and has been trading since before the Great Fire of London. A roll of honour on one of the walls records the name of every landlord since 1673! There’s even plans from the last restructure of the bar in 1896, incredibly the tiny bar used to be split into four! Red Car Pubs acquired The Bell from the legendary Betty Jeskey in 2004. She had been landlady for the previous 40 years and finally decided to hang up her bar towel at the grand old age of 86.

Up the stairs is an even tinier dining room although it seats sixteen comfortably – a fantastic little hideaway that is also available for private functions.

“This may well be the oldest area of London, but it seems to embrace contemporary design like no other- something that’s made an endangered species of the old-school City pub. The Bell, however, survives, half-hidden off Cannon Street and serving well kept ales in a cosy room for which the term ‘unpretentious’ could have been coined. Plentiful perches and lots of standing room mean there’s ample space for perusing scenes of City life gone by that adorn the walls and the roll of honour listing every landlord since the Great Fire. A gem”
